My Seventh Fishing Trip - 26 August - Southern Bottom

Wooooo...... My virgin offshore trip!!!! So excited! I didn't have the proper equipment and one of the guys was kind enough to lend me his set. But I think his reel need servicing, pull up small fish feels like fighting a Marlin lol. Bah who cares! Here's how it went!

I met up with two guys Wilson and Chang Wei at CCK MRT to share a cab down together to meet 3 other guys. And we arrived at Buroh Lane, the place where they kill pigs. I remember watching a documentary with Wong Li Lin about this place. I never knew why her face looked like that the whole show.... until I was there... Whole life whole life whole life.... I never smelt a worse smell than this >.<

This was our boat. 10 pax boat but only 6 of us for more space and comfort.

Photobucket

Getting on the boat, Rambo style.

Photobucket

Quite nice scenery on the way there, took about 30 mins. Saw some nice islands.

Photobucket

And the beeeaaautiful sunset which is my wall paper now :)

So we got our gear ready and started fishing at the first spot. Being a newbie, I was quite lost at what to do, but the guys were so helpful and patient with me, teaching me everything. Jian fei lent me his rod set and helped me set it up too :) Thanks guys you rock.

Then Ah Yam, who was sitting like 2 finger lengths from me kept pulling up fish after fish. His first shark..

Photobucket

Photobucket

Even after we moved spot he caught snappers and all that, BUT I GOT NOTHING. And my damn line was just next to his. WHAT AM I DOING WRONG OMG. So after seeing me pout, he kindly offered to change place with me. As if it was gonna make a difference, but just change anyway :S

I asked the boatman if he was fishing. He said he no sotong and doesn't want to use ours. So if he can catch some, he will fish, otherwise he zzz. So the boatman was in front trying to catch sotong then suddenly..

GAO HE AH! GAO HE AH! Wah he shouted so loud I kenna shocked. Wow biggest grouper I have ever seen fished up!

Photobucket

Photobucket

I think this grouper is a female one. You see the size of the mouth? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Photobucket

Anyway, everyone got hits already. Me? I didn't even have small fish bite my bait. Everytime I pull up to check, my sotong still there looking at me. VERY DETERMINED, first trip cannot go back empty handed. So all the guys went to sleep and only Chang Wei and I were trying our luck. We managed to pull up some nice sized sotongs which were hard to get that night. Lucky people sleeping so we can take the good bait. Then we saw something different attack our pick-up. Cuttlefish...... Chang Wei used it later, but didn't catch anything. Haha. I think Ah Yam's snoring scared everything away, basket.

Photobucket

I want to tell you all one super lame joke from Ah Yam.
"抓大鱼就好
不要抓大鱼的妈妈
You know why?
If not will become
大姨妈"

LAME

As it was my first trip, I didn't know what to expect. I didn't realise that a boat rocking so hard for so many hours would take it's toll on me. Stomach don't feel good, eyes burning, hand aching, smelly and frustrated.

AND THEN SUDDENLY!!!!!!!!!!!!

....still no bite......
kay en en bee see see bee

Soon, it was morning and the guys were waking up. The current was also changing. So as everyone was setting up their rods, I moved to the front of the boat to fish alone, also because my sinker was too small to stand behind.

Emo... Emo... Sleepy.. Still waiting for that tug to send my adrenaline pumping...

Suddenly.....

Poke Poke.. My rod nodded twice in approval for me.. Fish on!

I pumped the line hard cos excited and thought it was a grouper....

Nothing...

Sian, go back to waiting.

But something kept tugging my line a little bit. So I remembered Ah Yam's advice. If got fish bite and you pull but nothing, bring it back down to the same place and wait. Cos the fish are very greedy they will turn around to wallop it all.

BAM!
FISH ON!
100%

I stood up and started pumping and reeling, everyone saw me and kept cheering me lol. I knew it was a small fish but this fella was giving me one hell of a fight.

Finally, I pulled it up and it was a Spanish Snapper. Didn't take a pic of it then cos I was too tired lol. Ah Yam kept saying, "Matt you can go sleep now ahhahaha". So evil.

Throw my line down again... 5mins later...

BAM AGAIN!
FISH ON!

This one no fight, never pull me, but very very heavy. The boatman keep shouting GAO HE! GAO HE! I also thought it was cos grouper no fight one.

But instead, this fella came up......

After I pulled it up, boatman said that's all for today, going home :(

Here was our total catch for the day. Thankfully I managed to contribute right at the last minute and the feeling was awesome.

6 Sharks (One not in pic, we forgot he was lying on the side of the boat).
5 Snappers
1 Grouper
1 Sweetlips
2 Kim Bak Lor

I was thinking, "Ok lar managed to bring 2 home, father won't kp so much say pay money never catch anything". But I was surprised that when distributing, they shared the fishes, so I had more to bring home :P

$75 well spent. Only the rocking of the boat was.. Urgh.. My whole body still rocking until I went to bed.

Here's a cute pic of a parasite that was on the Shark.

Photobucket

Story doesn't end here.

While I was in the shower I heard my maid scream and my mother shouting my name. So I rushed down.

"WHAT HAPPENED?!?!"

I saw a fin cut Shark lying on the chopping board and my maid with her hand under the tap. The damn Shark was still alive!!!!! AND IT TURNED AND BIT HER WITH HIS LAST BIT OF STRENGTH! Poor Reya, small cut only but can you imagine the shock... Haha...

Ok signing off now, I shall wait until all the fishes have been cooked over the next few days and post the pics of that here again! DINNER TIME!

My Sixth Fishing Trip - 12th August - Labrador Park

Firstly, there are two reason I have been fishing so regularly.

1. I just graduated looking for a job. Very free. Better than stay at home play games whole day, might as well go fish.
2. Melvin's work only one off day a week he damn busy long working hours. He finally got 10 days off and it was ending, so we fished as much as we could before it was over.

OK JUSTIFIED.

Today we planned to go to St John's for half a day. Melvin starts work tomorrow. But due to some hiccups Melvin and his gf arrived late. Damn wasted he missed the ferry by two minutes. I was there early but I couldn't do anything :S So we decided to head down back to Labrador Park to try.

After setting up our gear and casting, Melvin got a Todak bite within minutes. But small one. Long story short, he noob, Todak escaped.

Labrador Park sibei jialat I tell you. Hours and hours wasted, no Tamban no nothing. Then suddenly this aunty pulled up quite a few fishes. She like very pro and experienced so I spoke to her. I think she was using size 5 -7 hooks. Four hooks, prawn bait. She just throw down below the jetty.

Sick of no Tamban, so I copy.

Not much to say here, I caught some and she caught some. These fishes all I never see before. But the aunty say very nice one can eat. So after I got home, I researched their names. Oh and when the aunty left, she gave me all her fishes cos she say too little for her to bring home anyway. Power one this aunty only want big fish or many many fishes, two or three she don't want one, not like me hahahahaha.

Sotong!

Cardinalfish!

Barracuda!
Website says.... This is the smaller cousin of the 2-3ft ones. However, this smaller one is nicer to eat :D

Spinefoot!

Leatherjacket! Eh this one damn ugly la. The skin is.. wah lau damn disgusting can. And even after one hour in my dry styrofoam box, these fellas still alive. Wah lau.. But I was in for a surprise.

This was what was going to be on the dinner plate later!
Photobucket

Aunty told me the Leatherjacket just peel off the skin and fry. Barracuda chop up and fry. Spinefoot also just fry. Plus the Kunning also just fry la this one I already know duh lol.
During dinner, I had the biggest shock of my life.

Barracuda, tasted abit funny but still very very nice. Just too many fine bones, annoying.

Spinefoot, tasted sweet and had alot of meat, very nice. My grandmother whose appetite is not good, at one whole fish by herself. She loved it.

Leatherjacket, this ugly damn thing shocked me the most. The meat was sooooo tender, soft and sweet. Omg wow! It tasted something like Whiting and Blue Grenadier I used to always eat when I was studying in Australia! This ugly thing so nice to eat!!! Shocking!! I must go get more. Poor gf didn't get to try these, I must go fish more and grill for her to eat!! SHIOK!

I guess this can be considered progress too since I learned about these new fishes that ended up in my fat belly. I want MORE MORE MORE MORE MORE!!!!!!!

My Fifth Fishing Trip - 9th August - St John's Island

Ready for a long ass post with many many pictures? Oooo something good is coming up! :D

Armed with nothing more than determination and some new information from forums, Melvin and I got our act together and headed down to St John's Island again. Yes, we were determined to conquer it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was a Sunday.. The 9th of August.. National Day. So.. I need to sing my National Day song first. Written by Mrs Christina Wang from Henry Park Primary School 20 years ago. Hahahahahahahahaha. My gf hates this song, that's why I love to sing it to her.

READY?!

THE NINTH OF AUGUST IS A HOLIDAY
WE DON'T HAVE TO GO TO SCHOOL WE ALL CAN PLAY
WE'LL BE DRESSED IN OUR BEST
ESPECIALLY FOR TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
HIP HIP HOORAY IT'S OUR NATIONAL DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hahaha okokok don't waste time...

Melvin bought some Tambans so we quickly fixed up our 9ft rods with floats and let the strong current whisk them out. We then quickly set up our smaller rods to catch some small live baits.

Damn lame I tell you. Got many uncles sitting beside us trying to jig for Tambans or any small fishes to use as bait. All got nothing. But Melvin and I pulled up fish after fish lol. This fish is called Kunning. I think that's how you spell it, not sure. It's the fish you eat with Nasi Lemak is what I was told. Here we go...

Don't I look more and more like a fisherman? Bwahahahahaha....

We pulled up some coral fishes too. Dunno can use or not but just keep and try lor hor?

By the way, Melvin's brain for the past few days before this trip can only thing of Todak. He whole day tell me how much he wanna catch Todak. I wanted to catch Queenfish. But that day we didn't have the proper equipment for it. Lesson learnt, now at least I know what to prepare.

So we threw out some live kunning and proceeded back to catch more. Then suddenly, this guy on our left shouting and shouting, I thought what sia. With kaypo eyes, we looked on carefully to see what the commotion was about.

Ahhh... He caught a Todak. And chey... also not big... same size as the one I caught at Labrador Park...

So our attention turned back to Kunning.

Then I heard.... Zeeet Zeeet Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet.
MY LINE TURNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I rushed over and waited for a while.. So kan jiong! Then I fought it for awhile. This stupid Melvin didn't even turn to look at me, he thought nothing. I said, "GOT LA". So I asked him come over try reel see got feel or not. He reeled, he say don't have la, just your float against the current. Sure no feel la, cos I already fought the damn thing until he tired. What the heck, reel back anyway right?

WOAHHHHHHHH TODAK!!!! BIG BIG TODAK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Melvin so excited he ran down to pull the line for me when close. He so excited that before I even take picture with my catch, he ask me take for him first. Basket wanna steal my limelight.
Photobucket
Photobucket
My Todak!!!!! BIG BIG ONE!!! OK! Improvement again! Progress! Happy!!!

So we proceeded to take out the hook from the Todak and we were quite far away from where we caught it, about two bustops length. Suddenly, one uncle started shouting.
"AH DI AH!!! AH DI AH!!!!" Melvin's turn!!!! Wah he run so fast IPPT sure gold. His line Zeeeeeeet Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet Zeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet non stop so loud. So much more intense than mine!!!!

Lol you should see how excited he was. He kept talking about that sound the whole freaking day.
Photobucket
Photobucket

Melvin's Todak bigger than mine a little bit. Wow nice catches. Three Todaks in five minutes!
Photobucket

We got nothing after that so I'm going to proceed to the next part of this long post :D

Here is a pic of my Todak before he was smashed to smittereens.
Photobucket

After we reached home, I quickly googled to find out how to cook this monster. I found a Otak recipe and my gf and I quickly got to it. Here are the pics!

Yummy Yummy. It wasn't perfect and can be improved but it was our first try! Plus the fish was caught by me so the feeling even more song! Song Song!!!

Was a good day. Everyone was happy, except for my gf cos she sat in the tent at St John's Island the whole day hahaha. But nvm la, she eat the Otak she happy already lol.

So, all in all. Progress. Good!
