Kusu Island... Hmmm...
All psyched up for this trip, but when I got up around 830am, it was raining shits and peas. Sigh. So emo I tell you. Then Melvin called me and said it was raining heavily but Woodlands side stopped already, so the rain should stop soon and he was already on the train. But it looked like the kinda rain that wouldn't stop around my area. From where I live, if it rains here = Kusu Island also rains. So I looked for the weather report and my heart sank further.
Thursday Morning Temperature: 26°C
Cloudy with showers likely. Chance of a thunderstorm. 5 to 6 mm of rain.
Thursday Afternoon Temperature: 31°C
Cloudy with showers likely. Chance of a thunderstorm. 9 to 10 mm of rain.
Saturday Evening Temperature: 28°C
A mix of cloudy and syb with showers likely. Chance of a thunderstorm. 10 to 11 mm of rain.
Geez..... My sister asked me if I wanted to cancel the trip but I couldn't although I was tempted to, Melvin and Ethan already en route. Oh yea, was taking my sister and her bf along for this trip. She's going back to UK for her studies this Sunday so I thought I'd take her at least once.
Once we arrived at Marina South Pier, the rain had barely stopped, was still drizzling though. Oh, I didn't tell anyone about the weather report till we arrived on the Island :P
Once we arrived at Kusu, as usual, we immediately proceeded to the unused jetty and set up our equip with lightning speed. Casted the 9ft rods out and started jigging with the 5fts.
The last trip I made, alone I got like what, 15 fishes in 30mins? So be prepared for many many many pics as 5 of us were there for 1/2 a day. But obviously I'm not gonna put every single pic up. Still, there's gonna be quite a few this post.
Within 5mins, both Melvin and I got the same fish one after the other, me first of course, I'm the pro remember? Strange ass fish, first time seeing it.
Common Name(s): Common Bullseye
Scientific Name: Pempheris Multiradiata
As we continued on, more and more of the usual suspects emerged. Here's one point to note. The water was great for fishing that day and the sun was up, super hot, but we weren't getting as many bites as I did previously. Also the fishes pulled up were of limited range unlike my last trip here. Here's why I think this is so. The last time I came, I used prawns bought from the market. But whenever we go fishing with Melvin, we use frozen peeled prawns. Why? Melvin is a chef and I always ask him to kope prawns from his kitchen. I always say, "High quality prawn = High quality catch". I just say that to make him bring them, but I actually think the chances are lower. His frozen prawns have no smell. After touching them, no smell. Here are some pics of the usual suspects.
I don't know what fish this is, looks like a bream to me. In fact it's tail looks like the Butterfly Whiptail, but colour is different. So I'm just gonna list it as that.
Common Name(s): Butterfly Whiptail
Scientific Name: Pentapodus Setosus
Common Name(s): White-shouldered Whiptail
Scientific Name: Pentapodus Bifasciatus
Common Name(s): Charcoal Damsel
Scientific Name: Pomacentrus Brachialis
Common Name(s): Camera Whore
Scientific Name: Kameranus Fagatronis Corksucka
Common Name(s): Scissortail Sergeant
Scientific Name: Abudefduf Sexfasciatus
Many different kind of Tuskfishes today, lazy to list each name so just ima just leave you with one name :P
Common Name(s): Blackspot Tuskfish
Scientific Name: Choerodon Schoenleinii
Common Name(s): Diamond Wrasse, Bubblefin Wrasse
Scientific Name: Halichoeres Nigrescens
Common Name(s): Chocolate Hind, Indian Grouper
Scientific Name: Cephalopholis Boenak
and just in case you missed it the last time..
Common Name(s): Camera Whore
Scientific Name: Kameranis Fagatronus Corksucka
We got two of this. Sister's bf pulled up the smallest one I've ever seen. His was the size of a 20cent coin.
Welp, thats all folks! But hey, I'm not done.
I was determined not to be confined to that jetty today, so I planned my next stop. Since I knew there were only two ferry timings that day (one that took us there and one that would take us back), I figured no one would give a shit if I fished at the main jetty. There was a NO FISHING sign by the way. Meh, what gives? Turned out shitty and boring, less bites than the other jetty, sangkot heaven and same damned fishes anyway.
So I moved to the beach behind the unused jetty the others were still at, Melvin was behind me. When I reached there, I dropped my rod and bait and went... "Wow..." Here's why.
Quickly snapped a few shots before Melvin came over. Looking down just at the shoreline, I saw thousands of small fishes. Thousands. And by small I mean longkang fish size small, Ikan Bilis small. Then I looked a little further by the rocks and went, "Holy Mary mother of............"
Yep, they were the length of my forearm plus minus. Are they Threadfins? I'm not sure, haven't caught one, but sure as hell looks like it to me. Expensive great eating fishes. So you ask, "If so many, then why so expensive?" Well, do you see me catching any? They were swimming at our feet but won't take the bait. When Melvin came over and saw them, he sooooooo excited he ran back to change his line. One actually started to nibble his bait but he was so excited he struck soooo early and didn't get shit. All were scared after that. Asshole.
Anyways, if you read my last Kusu post about the big ass fish I couldn't identify and wanted to catch at the jetty, I found out what it is. A nice forum kaki PM'd me a pic, strange he could tell what I was talking about from my vague description. Well it's a Rabbit Fish, huge ass one though. It was still there, uncatchable. Well, fuck you Rabbit Fish, I got a new target now.
That school of Threadfins.
Next time, I'll get you.

My Ninth Fishing Trip - 15 Sep - Changi Broad Walk
Urgh... This place... Urgh...
Together with Melvin, his gf and my best friend Ethan, we tried to find this damn place a few times. Past two weeks we haven been going to Pulau Ubin, and have always been interested to try out Changi Broad Walk (CBW). Asked and asked for directions quite a few times. One time, we walked all the way to the sailing club area when we saw a dead end. And because we walked so damn far already, I thought we went the wrong way, so go back. But this was in the evening already after one long day on Ubin, so you can imagine how tired and pissed we all were. Only later did I realise that CBW was just beyond the damn sailing club. So we made it a resolution that we MUST get to this freaking place next week. So we did, and here's the story.
Met up at Changi Village to stock up on some live prawns and other accessories. Recently, I've been having this fetish of using tamban lines, hook up some small pieces of prawns, and playing with small fishes. After some trial and error, my favourite choice is Angler's Pal brand, size 10 feathered line. Then we proceeded and took a bus there, 3 or 4 stops.
Usually I wouldn't take a picture of the place but I HAD to take this one for being so god damn hard to find for us.
Once we arrived, same drill. At the speed of light, we fixed up our long rods and casted. Then proceeded to fix up our small rods to play with small fishes :D
Within the next 30mins, I pulled up like 30586795873498573498 of these.
I thought they were "tua baks" which is why I kept them as bait. Turns out, they were actually Glass Fishes which are absolutely and utterly USELESS. Well at least I learnt something. So I threw em all away.
Now THIS is the actual "tua bak" which we only caught one of, around 6pm.
Today Ethan bought a 7ft rod. I'm so jealous :( The rod is a Daiwa rod and I also helped him choose a matching Daiwa reel. Both gold in colour, very very nice looking. Also, the price was good! Only $25 for the rod and $30 for the reel and god damn that reel feel soooo good compared to mine. Dammit, I also want!!!!!!
Being Ethan's second fishing trip, he everything also gong gong and blur. Besides, he's sooo stupid I don't expect him to pick up the tying and fixing up your rod thingy that quick anyway. Yup, if you're reading this, YOU ARE DUMB.
BITE ME.
Anyway, lucky he got help from a friendly guy there :P
Here's a picture so everyone doesn't have to see so much text before I continue talking about him.
What I don't understand is, we were both using the same line, same rod, same reel, same everything, only difference is I MORE HANDSOME. Anyway, I kept catching the stupid Glass Fish but he got all kinds of stuff EXCEPT Glass Fishes. He pulled up a rusty fishing stand, and a rock. And you know what's amazing about the rock? The rock was solid, no holes except for one smaaaaaallll hole by the side, and his hook managed to go in... Champion...
Suddenly he started screeching like a little girl, and I turned and saw his whole rod bend. I rushed over and saw him reeling in an enormous Box Fish. But no picture. Why? This idiot so scared his rod break don't dare to reel in and let it hang there. The fish dropped back down before I could pull it up. It would have been a really nice picture. Stupid dumbass.
Not much else happened but we managed to pull up small fish after small fish. Melvin pulled up a Rabbit Fish which I had for dinner later :P Here are the pictures! Almost all of the fishes were released by the way. Only those unfortunate ones that didn't make it, we pulled back out of the water.
Diamond Wrasse
Indian Snapper
(???)
Rabbit Fish
Seagrass Tuskfish
Cardinal Fish
THIS LAST FISH, I DON'T AND STILL DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS. PLEASE DON'T EAT THIS FISH. PLEASE DON'T. IT TASTES LIKE............................................
S H I T
LITERALLY.
DON'T EAT IT.
Only reason I brought it back is cos it was dead, I thought maybe I'd try. Dammit.
Before we left, something pulled my line a little bit, then... SANGKOT! Dammit I thought it was stuck. But I gave it one huge tug and found this little bugger rounded up into a ball. Here are pictures of two friendly pests that joined us for the day.
Before I go, I need to add one last thing.
This thing happened to me three times that day. I swear to God I will never make this dumb mistake again. The first time, someone ran over to tell me he saw my rod bend once. So I ran over and checked. As I was reeling back, it was heavy and I thought it was seaweed. It wasn't moving but it was heavy. Suddenly, sangkot, stuck. After a few tugs, I cut my line. This happened two more times.
Now then I realised. I'm pretty damn sure it was a stingray. If it wasn't my rod wouldn't have bent. If it wasn't it wouldn't have been stuck in the rocks in the same fashion all three times. After fishing for awhile now, I can judge the weight of my sinker or seaweed. The only reason I misjudged it as seaweed was because it was a little heavy and I was too kanjiong. I should have noticed that seaweed tends to float a little once u pull the rod up. But this one sank right back down everytime I pulled it. Whatever it is, I'm very sure it was a ray. DAMMIT! Next time I will fight the damn thing with more brains.

My Eighth Fishing Trip - 01 September - Pulau Ubin
On the way to Ubin, I suddenly remembered that there were many fishing shops at Changi Village. Just the night before we were fretting over where to buy bait. So we hurried down to the shops and bought 300grams of live prawns, a pump and a styrofoam box. Wow my first time trying live prawns. I always wanted to but no chance due to transport.
After buying everything and arriving at Pulau Ubin, it started to rainnnnnnnnnn..... Boooooo... The boatman on the way there said even if it rains it will only be for a while because the clouds look like they are blowing straight into mainland. So we hurried to a coffee shop for lunch.
Rain rain rain...
But just nice as we were done, the rain started to subside into mere drizzle. So Melvin and I decided to go recce a fishing spot before asking his gf and her cousins to move with us. The volunteer guy said to walk 200meters in the west direction along the coast... OMG it was more than 1km can! Asshole...
Finally, happy with the spot we found, Melvin and I started heading back. Then Melvin said, "Wah the boatman very clever know the rain will stop". What happened? 5 minutes after that sway zheng Melvin open his sway zheng mouth............... RAIN........................................... HEAVY RAIN.........
But before it started pouring, as we were walking back, I suddenly saw something enormous fly past my face. "SIMI L** J***!" I said. Oh.. my.. god.. IT WAS A HORNBILL!!! I have never ever seen a Hornbill in the wild before. And the best part? There were two! Male and female! I quickly asked Melvin to STFU and proceeded quietly trying to snap some shots of them. Wah my lousy camera on maximum zoom plus me being nervous really cannot make it. I tried, so here are some of the better shots.
Absolutely beautiful birds!
So after being stuck in the volunteers shelter for 30mins *skips boring stuff* we made our way down. Oh wait, something happened at the shelter.
We walked down to the beach when the rain stopped, then I smelt something awful. So I turned to Melvin and said, "Fuck you la! Pang pui so smelly!" Then Melvin say he never and looked around. Then he shouted LOOK! The smell was coming from a 1/2 eaten approximately 1kg Chermin. OMG PULAU UBIN GOT FISH! EXCITED SIA!
Blah blah blah, we reached the spot and quickly casted out our 9ft rods. My 7ft rod was lent to his gf's KIND cousin. In the meantime, we whipped out our 5ft rods, attached a tamban line and some prawn bait and started casting.
Wah Pulau Ubin fish very hungry sia, no one feed them haha. We pulled up Ah Seng after Ah Seng. Forums say Ubin is Ah Seng heaven, and everyone makes noise when they get Ah Seng after Ah Seng. WHAT THE HELL IS AN AH SENG!?!?!?! I knew this was it because of the sheer number we pulled up... came home and checked, AND I WAS RIGHT!
This is Ah Seng...
Then I pulled up a Butterfly Whiptail, what a fancy name. This fish can change colour from what you see in this pic to brown. Cool stuff.
Then we got this ugly nonsense called a Tropical Sand Goby...
Soon after, I got this Long-Tailed Tripod Fish... This fella lived with our live prawns the whole day happy and alive till we released it before going home...
Melvin's gf managed to foul hook some Flower Crabs too O.O" I very clever, I put the crabs into the prawn box, end up the damn crab ate a few of our prawns hahaha!
We caught many other small fishes that were unaccounted for and became bait. We had one Milkfish and Two Striped Cardinal fish too.
Then, the tide started coming in, I blur blur never notice until my pants all wet. Basket. Melvin re-casted his 9ft rod and went to the toilet. When he came back, he started reeling it in. Siao liao! Tio Sangkot! Got stuck in the rocks, but he pumped the rod real hard and it came free! As he was reeling in, he thought it was heavy cos of the bazillion seaweed floating around. To our surprise....... this came up!
Stingrays were always part of our goals but we have never caught any! This fella was so small! We played with him for awhile before letting him go. I guess it's really young too, he didn't even have his venomous spines yet. I guess this was our highlight for the day...
Later on we proceeded back to Changi Coastal Walk to fish since we still had some prawns left. Nothing much happened here except 7 out of 10 casts = sangkot. This Melvin even hit a tree branch with the sinker causing the whole huge branch to fall off. We caught some small weirdo fishes and crabs. I didn't take any more photos, but there was this one ugly ass fish that could croak like a frog, scary stuff. Found out it was a Toadfish lol.
Till next time! RAWR!
